Apply to perform for the showcase at the Do it for the Culture Festival on May 27–31, 2027
This competitive showcase features ensembles rooted in Afro-Brazilian and African diaspora arts. Selected ensembles will receive a year-long mentorship leading up to the festival and present their work on stage during the event.
Overview
Who can apply
We welcome capoeira practitioners working in ensemble form—such as a group/academy, a project created by a teacher with their students, or a collaboration between capoeiristas who choose to create work together (including across different groups). We’re especially interested in ensembles that engage with the music, movement, and stories that have grown alongside capoeira.
What Reviewers Focus On
• Artistic concept & structure
• Historical/cultural context & roots in the African diaspora
• Relevance to contemporary life
• Inclusion (who is represented, whose stories are centered)
• Accessibility for the audience (how people can connect/follow)
• Practical fit with program time, space, and technical limits
Dates & Application Fee
• Festival: May 27–31, 2027
• Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until September 30, 2026, or until all slots are filled. Early applications are strongly encouraged.
• Notifications will be sent as decisions are made, and all applicants will hear back by October 5, 2026.
• Application fee: $50 per ensemble/submission (via Zelle to quilombocc@gmail.com)
We encourage early applications, as space in the mentorship program and showcase is limited.

How to Submit
1. Download the application form (Google Doc or Word) and make your own copy.
2. Fill out all sections of the form.
3. Pay the $50 fee via Zelle to chicagocapoeiracenter@gmail.com with your Ensemble Name in the memo.
4. Email your application:
